PLGA Global Board Meeting
9:00 am - Noon
Digital Gravure & Extended Gamut
1:15 pm - 3:30 pm
Moderator – Jay Sperry, Clemson University, Research Associate, Sonoco Institute of Package Design and Graphics
Digital Gravure
Matthew Bernasconi, Technical Director, Opaltone Inc.
It’s a Global Village. The printing industry is becoming increasingly competitive with CPCs demanding shorter runs and faster turnarounds. In order to capitalize on these demands, advanced printing technologies are constantly needed. The CPC’s collective message is loud and clear—Irrespective of the print process, cost-effective Digital printing must begin with a standardized (process) ink set and a global color calibration system to ensure consistent quality packaging each and every time. Analogue (spot color) printing is an expensive, inconsistent and redundant technology.’
Understand how to quickly advance from analogue to “Digital” Gravure by investing in the latest 7–Color proofing, prepress & print technologies. In this session, you’ll discover how to eliminate 100s of spot colors, thereby reducing ink and substrate waste while increasing valuable press uptime. Standardization = $avings.
Get up-to-speed on the latest Gravure specifications for calibrating ink (hue angle & density), gamma curves and engraving depth/angles – utilizing a global 7-Color standard.
The best way to reduce ink washups is to eliminate them. Change cylinders (not ink).
Deliver punctual, consistent print quality. “Digital” Gravure is your key to success!
Going “Digital” also means going “Green.” Become an environmentally responsible Converter.
Expanded Gamut Production Requirements
Jay Sperry, Clemson University, Sonoco Institute of Package Design and Graphics
Expanded color gamut requires careful attention to production capabilities and pressroom optimization. Beginning an expanded gamut program with the right questions to have for production systems and processes will allow for a quicker project timeline and help to manage expectations of what is success.

Engraving Optimization for Expanded Gamut & Premium Gravure
Garett Long, Southern Graphic Systems
Garett Long discusses recent findings with various screening and imaging options for gravure cylinders that lend well towards improving highlight reproduction in gravure printing—a requirement for realizing the full benefits for color reproduction and workflow automation with Expanded Color Gamut printing. Long will also review problem-solving techniques ECG may be utilized for in the gravure packaging market.
Special Effects for Expanded Color in Packaging
Mark Geeves, Color-Logic
Mark will present a newly developed system and technology to allow printers to differentiate themselves utilizing special effects in packaging graphics. Mark will discuss the process steps for implementation, the Color-Logic model, and show examples of technology in flexo and litho segments.

Convergence of Gravure & Digital Ink Jet Technology
Moderators: Mark Glendenning, Inland Label & Marketing Services LLC & David Haslam, Southern Graphic Systems
Speakers: Serge Trajkevich; Lyft Visual;
Ken Stack, Jetrion
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The present technical model for integration of ink jet technology into a packaging/label gravure line and future applications of digital technologies. Serge Trajkevich, President of Lyft Visual, will cover how his Dotrix print has generated a new market for his business and discuss the technical challenges that he has faced as a short-run supplier supporting the gravure market, matching color gamuts as well as substrate and structure considerations. Digital is not replacing the gravure market but supporting it through product launch and inventory shortfall support. Jetrion will cover the short-run capabilities of ink and how they process might be incorporated into a gravure heavy operation.
Gravure in North America & Europe
3:15 pm - 4:45 pm
Moderator – Paul Lodewyck, Flint Group
The perception is that Gravure is stronger in Europe than in North America. In this session, speakers who have experience in what approaches are being used in Europe will provide overviews in their specialty areas. Following the formal presentations, there will be an opportunity to ask questions in a panel discussion. Here is your chance to check out the stories you have heard and separate the fact from fiction.
PaC.Space- A European Update
Speaker: Stefan Hilss; Business Unit Manager, Janoschka Graphics Gravure Color Management
The ERA Pro Gravure Working Group was formed to address the complex packaging supply chain matrix of substrates, ink systems, finishing processes and prepress data. The result of its work is PaC.Space—a common color standard for packaging gravure. PaC.Space provides a general gravure packaging color space, allowing a defined interface from supplied data to the process-specific and printer-specific needs. PaC.Space covers CMYK process colors. It supplies the colorimetric description of that color space and also color profiles to convert to this color space. Profiles are supplied as ICC profiles as well as GMG profiles. As the characterization data of the PaC.Space is also supplied, it is possible to create your own solutions such as profiles, device link profiles, etc. All conversions can be done with standard tools. Brand owner, design agencies, and prepress suppliers will all benefit from using this defined workspace.
Gravure Packaging Inks - North America and Europe
Speaker: Dr Matthias Henker, Product Director, Packaging & Narrow Web Willstadt, Germany
Are you getting the best technology available globally for your printing inks? North American converters are aware of the more widespread use of gravure in Europe and often wonder if they have access to technology evolving on the Continent. As the world continues to shrink, understanding these differences and how to ask the right questions of ink suppliers can help ensure continued global competitiveness. While overall packaging requirements are similar, there can be subtle differences in the technologies and chemistries used for different applications. Matthias will outline and contrast what is going on differently from an ink perspective.
Printing Equipment - North America and Europe
Speaker: John Melotik,
Project Manager -North American Cerutti
John has just returned from a three-month stint in Europe and will provide an overview of the differences in equipment-related areas. This will include presses as well as differences observed in other equipment and ancillary areas.
