2003 PLGA Global Print Quality Award Winners

CATEGORY:
Prime PSA Film Label

COMPANY:
Package Service Co. L.L.C.

ENTRY:
Fabuloso Fresca

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Five-colors plus a UV curable overprint varnish printed on 2.6 mil white opaque BOPP. A bright well printed label with multiple vignettes, good color and register combined with solid graphics make this a winner.

CATEGORY:
Prime PSA Laminate Label

COMPANY:
Avery Dennison Sec. Prtg. Div.

ENTRY:
Duracell Ultra Tester

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
A very unique product that is produced using proprietary technology and processes. It can be stated that the process involves 7 steps and consists of 15 layers. The judges commented on the outstanding black and gold density as well as the very good registration, especially considering the multiple step process.

CATEGORY:
Stamps

COMPANY:
American Packaging

ENTRY:
Long Leaf/Pine Forest

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Six-colors printed on 110# PSA coated paper. It was pointed out that the job was technically difficult due to the back print that is done in-line. The judges commented that the job was well printed both front and back. Halftones are excellent and the line work front and back are brilliant. Register is outstanding.

CATEGORY:
Security Printing

COMPANY:
Scientific Games International

ENTRY:
Coming Up Roses

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Fifteen-colors on 10 point CIS board, multiple overprints and free radical UV coatings were used. The judges commented that the board used is difficult to print on. The colors are good and the registration reflects the nature of the product. Scratch-off area hides the variable image area.

CATEGORY:
Functional Printing

COMPANY:
Avery Dennison Dec. Tech. Div.

ENTRY:
Vitro Crisa Candle

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Six-colors printed on a proprietary heat transfer substrate. A label with halftones that look quite good. Well-printed vignettes.

CATEGORY:
Specialty Effects

COMPANY:
SleeveCo, Inc.

ENTRY:
Penzoil Quaker State

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Seven-colors printed on a shrink film. The product is the first time that shrinkable technology was used to fit the contours of a racecar. The judge's felt that in addition to the novelty value, the color was very good, the reversed out lines good and the halftones above average. All in all a quality reproduction.

CATEGORY:
Printer Technical Achievement

COMPANY:
SleeveCo, Inc.

ENTRY:
Black Magic Wheel Cleaner

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Six-colors printed on a newly developed proprietary film. The first full-body shrink label for a trigger spray bottle. Product took the place of a paper label. The judges commented on good dense colors and well defined key lines. A nicely printed sleeve that compensates well for the severe distortion.

CATEGORY:
Use of Non-Solvent Ink

COMPANY:
Smurfit-Stone, Santa Clara, CA

ENTRY:
Adidas

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Three-colors printed on .028 double lined kraft. One black and two white using 100% water based inks. A very difficult print job on uncoated kraft with excellent results. The solid background is exceptional in one pass and the edge definition of the type has not been lost by flooding.

CATEGORY:
Specialty Converting

COMPANY:
Nordenia USA

ENTRY:
Friskies Flexbox

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Seven-colors printed on a proprietary PET/PE laminate called "Nordenia Flexbox". The package consists of reverse printed oriented Polyester, laminated to a PE Sealant. The judges commented solid green and blue are excellent as are all of the colors. The halftones are well executed and the lettering on the back is very sharp and clean.
