WINNER

CATEGORY:
Stamps

COMPANY:
AAvery Dennison
Security Printing Division

ENTRY:
World of Postage Stamps 2006

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
10 Colors printed on non-phosphorus pressure sensitive stamp stock with a 50 pound liner using type “C” inks by Siegwerk Inks and a phosphorus coating over the stamps only (spot coating) on a Dianipon Kiko press. Avery Dennison submitted six different stamp issues as a single entry that reflects the fact that gravure is the process of choice for the high quality reproduction required by the United States Postal Service. The quality of print and hidden die cut used on the “SOUTHERN FLORIDA WETLAND” sample exhibits what is required for quality today. Each of the sets is distinctive and reflects the care taken to reproduce the original art. The halftone images are fine and the type is clean, crisp and truly outstanding. The front to back register and die cutting on all samples are reflective of the quality demanded by the United States Postal Service. What can be said about the stamps? All are very well done and shows just what gravure is capable of.

ENTRY:
Hamey & Sons
Organic Bangkok Tea

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors printed on PVC using solvent inks by Sun Chemical on a Chesnut press. A delicate looking label with the background patterns looking good and the small black type is good and legible. The fine details and vignette in the logo and use of spot color required special attention to engraving used Hell Extreme Engraving.

COMPANY:
Armstrong World Industries

ENTRY:
Rustic Chestnut

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
4 Colors printed on Vinyl film using solvent based inks from Delval on a Cerutti press. The judges felt that the product was well produced with not too much to criticize. The quality exhibited in this sample is very difficult to achieve. The job captures the details and subtle color shifts of real wood.

HONORABLE MENTION

Gift Wrap

COMPANY:
American Greetings

ENTRY:
Looney Tunes Christmas

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
4 Colors printed on 60# coated ground wood using water based inks on a Cerutti press. A glorious reminder of the Season just past and the result is a merry seasonable result. The quality is nice and the small back type is good. It should bring pleasure to those receiving it.

COMPANY:
Alcan Packaging-Atlanta

ENTRY:
Wrigley’s Eclipse
Polar Ice

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
4 Colors plus varnish printed on International Paper 12 point CIS board using Sun Chemical Inks on a Bobst press. A very good carton package that was achieved by using the white of the board for the white and an extremely good lay on the silver. This is a prime example of how gravure using only four colors can create a very graphic and pleasing package.

ENTRY:
Wrigley Eclipse

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
8 Colors printed on PVC film using Sun Chemical inks on a Chesnut press. The product launch of this new package has been highly successful. The metallics used were designed to match a traditional board package. The development and use of a special new no-split silver ink with high brilliance makes the package unique. Overall a contrasty label printed well with good clean type and saturated colors.
