WINNER

CATEGORY:
Paperboard-Top Coated

COMPANY:
ALCAN Packaging-Georgia

ENTRY:
Kool Mix

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Six colors + varnish, printed on 10pt CIS. This job was a multiple design promotional piece with various multi-level embossing. Both the green and blue samples were deemed bright and lively and very clean. The small pack was recognized as outstanding, the letters were crisp and there was no bleeding. The judges were particularly impressed by the embossed keyline around the figures and the Kool type.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Special Structure-Printed

COMPANY:
Smurfit-Stone, Santa Clara, CA

ENTRY:
Seagram’s Cooler

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
A four pack wine cooler carrier printed with 6 colors + lacquer printed on .019” thick carrier craft with wet strength. Nine new items all designed and printed in 2004. Print required a difficult nest in the sheet layout.

This entry was recognized as a colorful set of samples that allows for easy identification of a particular flavor. The colors are vibrant, the register was good and the register to die cut was above average and the “Seagram’s” logo was nicely done. A good job on a difficult substrate.

COMPANY:
Printpack, Inc

ENTRY:
Splenda Blend

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Nine color, reverse printed Polyester laminated with solventless adhesive. The judges commented that the vignettes were gorgeous and easy on the eyes. A nice pack with a very edible slice of cake with nice detail in the cake texture. The small blue and other colored type is well produced. A nice presentation.

WINNER

Film/Film Lamination-Process

COMPANY:
Printpack, Inc

ENTRY:
Jolly Rancher Lollipops

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Seven color printing on an extensible film that is even more unique and difficult because there is no white ink added for opacity. The type is sharp and well produced and the solid colors are very even. The reversed out type is good and sharp, there is no mottle or pinholes, excellent registration and the process on the girls face is exceptional, overall a nice print job with few flaws.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Paper/Film Lamination

COMPANY:
WRICO Packaging

ENTRY:
Wrigley Orbit White

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Five color reverse printed on 50-gauge film, solventless laminated to paper. Both the light and dark blue cylinders were engraved with the “Super E Process”. The judges commented on the package as a nice sharp sample with good contrast between the blue, black and white and also commented on the sharpness of the fine blue type. The blue vignette is outstanding, the solids very good and the registration outstanding.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Foil/Paper Lamination

COMPANY:
American Packaging

ENTRY:
Birdseye Frozen “Baby Peas”

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Seven colors + lacquer surface printed on foil, laminated to paper and with hot melt coating. The schedule for producing the 70 different packages was compressed in order to meet customer-imposed deadlines. The combination of royal blue and gold gives this package shelf appeal. The package has outstanding opaque white, the type is sharp and very legible and the illustration is sharp and well defined. Registration is good and overall an excellent presentation of product.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Pouches

COMPANY:
Nordenia USA

ENTRY:
Safeway Select-Chicken & Pork Potstickers

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Seven colors reverse printed on 48Ga Polyester and laminated with solventless adhesive. The use of metallized ink adds to the overall presentation. The judges commented that this entry is what gravure package printing is all about. The pack has nice contrast images with believable food display. The solids are good, halftones excellent, the black type sharp and clear and the reversed out type clear and legible.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Bags

COMPANY:
Diversapack

ENTRY:
Pampers Cruisers

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Seven color surface printed over white ink on 43 micron Polyethylene film. More than 16mm of total distortion built into graphics to assure registration and fit. Considered a very extreme design to print on Polyethylene on an in-line press.

The mother and baby illustration gives the impression of softness and closeness. The type is clear and legible, registration good and skin colors wonderful. The judges commented that this was an excellent execution on a difficult substrate.

HONORABLE MENTION

CATEGORY:
Unsupported Foil

COMPANY:
Catty

ENTRY:
Easter Wonka Hatching Eggs

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Four color printing on unsupported aluminum foil. This entry portrayed good results on a difficult substrate. It is a good use of water based inks and the overall challenges were numerous.
