HONORABLE MENTION

CATEGORY:
Reverse Printed

COMPANY:
Fort Dearborn Company

ENTRY:
All Small & Mighty

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
9 Colors plus protective lacquer printed on Oriented Polystyrene. This bright blue sample shows a good solidly printed background on a difficult substrate. The vignettes are smooth and the contrasting red and yellow areas work well. All of the type, reversed and normal are well produced and legible. A nice piece of work.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Reverse Printed

COMPANY:
SleeveCo, Inc.

ENTRY:
Mega Moose

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors printed on a PVC substrate. The metallic ink made this a challenging job on this substrate. A lively sample produced with a silver metallic ink dominating and the red and pinks offering a pleasing contrast. The registration is good with the really small type well produced and the contained images within the keylines well done. An attractive sample.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Heat Shrinkable -
Less Than 12%

COMPANY:
Fort Dearborn Company

ENTRY:
Thomas Kinkade

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
5 Colors printed on PETG. A demanding job that required four SKU’s on the same cylinder and that had to match Thomas Kinkades artwork exactly. The judges commented that this represents a nice sample with very festive images. The halftone images portray the scenes we would like to associate with Christmas. There is a good range of halftone reproduction and the few areas of black type are well produced.

HONORABLE MENTION

CATEGORY:
Heat Shrinkable-More Than 13%

COMPANY:
Fort Dearborn Company

ENTRY:
Hellmann’s Half The Fat Sauce

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
9 Colors printed on PVC film. Two images were printed in-line that matched proofs exactly. Both samples were produced with very good illustrations of food making it look very edible. The contrasts of blues and yellows are good and the vignettes smooth. This represents a nice clean look with clear, clean type.

HONORABLE MENTION

CATEGORY:
Heat Shrinkable-More Than 13%

COMPANY:
SleeveCo, Inc.

ENTRY:
Baja Rosa

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
6 Colors printed on PET. This sample gives a nice impression of a sunrise with a gradual transition from white to black. The use of gold enhances the illustration and the reproduction of the strawberries is well executed. The gold type is printed well and the vignettes are smooth and even. A nice label with inherent design problems that was well printed.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Heat Shrinkable-More Than 13%

COMPANY:
Alcoa Flexible Packaging

ENTRY:
Fancy Feast

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
8 Colors R3everse printed on PVC. Due to the nature of the contour, a shrink sleeve label was required to achieve 360-degree graphics. This is a delicately reproduced sample with subtle colors adding interest. The use of metallic purple ink adds to the quality of the sample. This was difficult to achieve because the purple ink contains actual metallic flakes that can tend to fracture or cause color alterations when shrunk. The judges felt sure that the cat food would look appetizing to a cat. The vignettes are handled and the black was printed with no dot skip. All of the different type sizes have been reproduced very well.

Non PSA Labels/Wraps

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Paper-Top Coated

COMPANY:
Inland Label & Marketing Services

ENTRY:
Black Horse

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors plus topcoat printed on CIS label paper that mimics an original oil painting. A good basic label with good solid colors and gold type. The remaining type is well defined and the silver color printed under the red replicates the metallic look.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Film Reverse Printed

COMPANY:
Diversapack

ENTRY:
Aquafina Flavor Splash

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
8 Color combination of three different labels was printed and slit into 36 lanes. The product features “bump” register in many areas and the reversed out type is clean, clear and crisp.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
In Mold Label-Paper

COMPANY:
Multi-Color Corporation

ENTRY:
Tide - Clean Breeze Detergent

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors printed on in mold label paper. The judges commented that this was a bright breezy label with a nice mix of metallic and conventional inks. The metallic cobalt blue of the TIDE name gives the signature yellow and fluorescent red additional “pop”. The lightness of the design gives it lift and the depth of the TIDE brings the product name to the fore. A very nicely printed label.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
In Mold Label-Film

COMPANY:
Multi-Color Corporation

ENTRY:
Purex - Lavender Fresh Detergent

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
6 Colors printed on film for in mold labels. Upon close inspection one can see that the background of the Lavender Fresh label is comprised of two blues and the logo is also created using screens of two blues accented by screen black. The blues and lavender give a fresh feel to the label and the different blues add to the effect. The reversed out type is crisp and clear and the vignette smooth.

HONORABLE MENTION

CATEGORY:
Heat Transfer Label

COMPANY:
Multi-Color Corporation

ENTRY:
American Chopper Big Gulp

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors printed on a release coated stock. This is a dramatic deep colored sample with a lot of subtle shade changes in the background. The halftones are well done, the tone range excellent and the highlights clear. The flesh tones are realistic and registration good. The small type is clear and legible and the overall job reflects a job well done.

HONORABLE MENTION

CATEGORY:
Heat Transfer Label

COMPANY:
Smurfit-Stone
DI-NA-CAL Label Group

ENTRY:
Pfizer Strongid® C Feed

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors printed on Di-Na-Cal gloss finish release coated stock. Pfizer chose the gravure process to achieve a photographic image for shelf presence. Two labels printed at the same time for the complete package. The horse in the meadow is a nice illustration with a broad range of halftones and clean highlights. The solids are good and the type very clear, you might even think that this was not a heat transfer label, a very nice job.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Heat Transfer Label

COMPANY:
Smurfit-Stone
DI-NA-CAL Label Group

ENTRY:
Dulux® Wallguard Paint

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
6 Colors plus two lacquers printed on DI-NA-Cal gloss finish release coated stock. Another two sample job that was well done. The illustration is very good with a lot of detail and good tone rages. The solid blue is well done and the type is clear and easy to read.

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Glue Applied Label

COMPANY:
Inland Label & Marketing Services

ENTRY:
Arizona Diet

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
6 Colors plus top coat printed on metallized holographic label paper. The six colors consisted of four process colors plus two PMS colors. The use of holographic paper and water based inks created the “shimmer” effect desired. This is a bright shiny label with plenty of color in the images and an almost oriental look. The halftone images are good and the solids have printed well.
