WINNER

CATEGORY:
Flexible Packaging

COMPANY:
Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging
Shelbyville, KY

ENTRY:
Ciab

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors printed on a paper/foil laminate using Flint Ink on a Rotomec press. A nice simple label that is well printed. The registration is good and the white ink on foil with vignette is difficult to produce. The solids look good and the type is clear and legible.

WINNER

CATEGORY:

COMPANY:
Avery Dennison
Security Printing Division

ENTRY:
Postage Stamps of the United States

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 to 9 Colors printed on two different pressure sensitive stamp stocks using Siegwerk C Type solvent based inks and Environmental Ink and Coating water-based coating on a Dia-Nippon Kiko press with engravings by WRE ColorTech. This job consisted of four different stamp sets, each very demanding. The fine detailing and high screen count printing can only be accomplished by the gravure process. The colors are excellent as is the color-to-color register on all sets. The register and die cutting are reflective of the quality demanded by the Postal Service.

Forever 2 Sided Booklet

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
10 Colors printed on Fasson 2-sided stamp stock using Siegwerk C Type solvent based ink on a Dia-Nippon Kiko press with engravings by WRE ColorTech. As one of our judges, Tony White, commented, “a cracking result.” This was an extremely difficult job to print, not only was it necessary to keep each side in register but also front to back. The stamp was printed using 300-400 line screen engravings making counterfeiting difficult. If you examine the stamps carefully, you will also note the inclusion of micro printing to further reduce the possibility of counterfeiting, the word “Forever” is micro-printed on each stamp. There is not much more that can be said about perfection.

Innovations
Injection In-Mold Cup

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Process

COMPANY:
Inland Label &
Marketing Services

ENTRY:
Coca Cola
Injection In-Mold Cup

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
4 Color process plus metallic silver and white overall, printed on BOPP using water-based inks and solvent based metallic silver on a Chesnut press. This is the first time this process has been used to produce an in-mold cup label. They are FDA compliant and must pass multiple dishwasher cycles and destruction tests. It is very busy label with clean crisp lines and the colors perfectly match the requirements of Coca Cola.

Chocolate Milk Shake

HONORABLE MENTION

CATEGORY:
Materials

COMPANY:
Multi-Color Corporation

ENTRY:
Shamrock Crispy Crunch
Chocolate Milk Shake

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
8 Colors printed on PETG with shrink ink on a Schiavi press. The PETG was down gauged for environmentally friendly sustainability. The use of “metal look ink” enhances the overall quality of this series of packages. The black type is good and the halftones well produced.

Marlboro Ultra Lights

WINNER

CATEGORY:
Overall Innovation

COMPANY:
Keating North America

ENTRY:
Marlboro Ultra Lights
Formula 1

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
7 Colors printed on SBS board using Sun Chemical inks at Shorewood Packaging, Newport News, VA. Direct laser engraved cylinders were used, and textured ink was used to provide a different “feel” to the front and back faces of the pack. It is a nicely produced sample with nice clear type, especially the Japanese characters. The small reversed out type is good and the silver adds class.
