Two Awards Given for Technical Achievement
Award being presented to eltromat
Jim Lepp presenting Technical Achievement Award
to Nat Stern, eltromat

The PLGA Global Organization presented two Technical Achievement Awards at their 2007 Technical Conference. Our congratulations to eltromat electronics, Inc. and Frost Converting Systems/Saueressig.

The PRESSROOM AWARD was presented to eltromat electronics, Inc. eltromat received the award for their new ST06 RGB Hands off Scanner. This is a truly hands off scanner that requires adjustments only in rare special cases.

A register control system can work properly only if all the register marks are accurately picked up by the sensing eye. Increased press and graphic capabilities have put a bigger demand on register control scanners. Eye marks can be very pale, transparent, or metallic.

Typical scanners require the operator to change the angle of reading depending on the optical or opaque characteristics of the register mark. If this adjustment is not done properly, many press lengths of material can be wasted as well as the loss of valuable time during set up. In some cases marks that cannot be detected, require the operator to switch over to a less optimal method of control such as mark to cylinder.

Exceptional color sensitivity is achieved on the ST06 RGB Hands off Scanner by using 3 overlapping spectral filter. The ability to work at a single angle is achieved by a special optical configuration. An angle of 15 degrees works for all samples without any adjustments. The high strength of the scanner signals minimizes electronic offsets and fine tuning, which will save both time and many press lengths of scrap product.

A Second Award presented this year, in the SUPPORT SYSTEM CATEGORY, was given to Frost Converting Systems/Saueressig for the Saueressig, in-machine sleeve change embossing system.

This unit is available for all rotogravure printing lines up to 1200mm wide. Single or double unit installations are possible. The units have two independent servo drives - one for each roller provide full automatic laser controlled male to female adjustment in both circumferential and cross machine directions, adjustable emboss height and male female positioning can be done at production speed. Fully automatic pre-setting print to emboss register is available. Sleeve change time is approximately 10 minutes from start to finish – register/pre-set can be done in an additional 5 minutes.

No repeat gears are needed. No cassette parts are needed, downtime is therefore dramatically reduced. Sleeves can be shipped easily via express mail. Sleeves can be made of steel brass or aluminum. No tooling/make ready technician is required for set-up - pressmen can operate the embossing system.
