Managing the Gravure Process – Setting Yourself Up for Success

This provides a macro overview of the process including details on how both a press room manager and a press operator can identify, measure, and control press side variables to maximize quality and reduce waste. It also shows how proper planning and preparation will help do the job right the first time. Trouble shooting: is this a learned perceptive art, or a clever name to disguise rework?

Inks and Coatings
Solvent, water, UV, and EB based inks and coatings are addressed. Advantages and disadvantages of each system are disclosed along with any recent changes within each system, what the changes mean, and their impact on the day to day life in a pressroom. Specific information is presented in regard to all of the related costs of choosing one particular ink system over the others; such as oxidation, waste disposal, adhesion, surface tension issues, and treatment levels etc.

Color Separation and Engraving
Speakers compare and contrast expanded gamut color separation techniques with traditional four color separation procedures. The advantages, costs, and what it takes to effectively run expanded gamut separations is explored. The importance of correct engravings and engraving specifications is explained along with their impact on a successful press run. Instruction on how to determine a proper engraving specification is shared.

The Hardware. Print Station Operation & Trouble Shooting
The hardware requirements for success on the press is covered. Knowing how to trouble shoot is great but why not learn what you need to get it right the first time. Experts show how to avoid problems rather than finding and fixing them later. We discuss maintenance techniques, cleanliness and the small details that either make us or break us.

Substrates
The full spectrum of substrates is addressed starting with what we need to know to bring these materials to a press room and run them successfully. How do things like surface tension, surface profile, and recycled content affect run ability? What are material specifications and what do they mean? What is being done to make substrates easier to run? How does the pressure to reduce substrate cost affect the run ability of the substrate? In other words what is the cost of saving money?

The Future: How Do We Get Better?
What does press ready really mean?
Knowing your capability, and how to determine what your capabilities are.
People and Attitudes: Explore the impact of human nature and our natural resistance to change. How do we overcome the mindset?
New Technology: How will automation and new operator techniques, both hardware and software, make us better? And at what cost?
